Running a business in any field is not an easy thing, you have to handle marketing, clients, finance, and product. When you are a freelance running your web development business from home you don’t only have to handle all of the above but you also have to maintain some self discipline. When you work in an office with other people it is often much easier to stay productive and not get distracted by every little thing (hi Facebook…) whereas the situation is different when there is no one watching. Here are a couple of tips that worked for me when I was banging it from home:
Get Out of Your Pajamas
I know it is really tempting to stay in your jammies all day but trust me, you are going to get a a lot more done if you put on some proper clothes. Apparently it is even backed up by psychologists, like the one quoted in this piece from Forbes:
“When we put on an item of clothing it is common for the wearer to adopt the characteristics associated with that garment. A lot of clothing has symbolic meaning for us, whether it’s ‘professional work attire’ or ‘relaxing weekend wear,’ so when we put it on we prime the brain to behave in ways consistent with that meaning.”
Of course don’t take it too far and a start buying suits at ‘Dolce and Gabbana’, a simple jeans and t-shirt will do the trick.
Keep Things In Order
When you are working for your salary in an office you always have to get there at a certain time and leave at a certain time. It is natural that when working from home schedule are less strict, and thats ok, but it is highly recommend that you have a routine that you can commit yourself to on a daily basis. Are you one of those people who like to wake up late in the morning? no problem, but make sure you are making up for lost time in other parts of the day. When I started working from home I had no idea how much I actually needed to work in order to pay the bills. After a while I started braking down how many hours I actually need to work a day in order to make ends meet. I got a Toggle account and started keeping track of my time. At the end of the day it feels really good to know that you earned your rest time.
Get Out of The Limbo
One of the biggest problems of running a web development business from home is that ‘work time’ and ‘home time’ get mixed up together. Every freelancer knows that limbo where you are never quite at work and never really at home just kicking it. One of the things that have helped me a lot with this issue is to find a good work space. There are a lot of coffee places you can work at or you can even allocate a room in your house to be your work room. You can also define certain hours of the day as work time, and once that time has passed you are officially free.
Collaborate With Other Professionals
Working alone can be really hard mentally. It is not easy not being able to discuss certain things, get someone else’s opinion or just bounce back some ideas. That is why it is really recommended to collaborate with other freelancers. Are you a developer? find a cool designer to work with on some of the projects, or even find another freelance developer to share some big projects with. You don’t even need to be working on the same project. Just working with someone in the same space can create a “work atmosphere” that will turn your productivity meter way up.
Another great way to interact with other developers is online, there are a lot of great communities out there where you can showcase your work and get some awesome feedback from great developers.
You can try:
Both of these communities are really great for getting feedback and interacting with other web developers/designers.
I know it sounds a bit irrelevant to your web development business but trust me, working out will immensely boost your productivity. When working from home automatically turns you into a less active person. And it is important to make up for that lack of activity. You don’t have to start lifting like Arnold, Just get out of the house for a jog or spend an hour at the gym lifting some dumbbells. It will get your blood flowing and your mind thinking clearer about your projects. It will also make you way more optimistic and energized for the challenges that await you.
